The Art of Tidying Up
The KonMari Method®
'Look more closely at what is there'. - Marie Kondo
Six basic rules of tidying by the KonMari Method®
1. Commit yourself to tidying
Approach your tidying journey with a clear vision and you will find and hold the energy and motivation throughout the process.
2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle
The tidying process signifies a turning point, so seriously consider the ideal lifestyle to which you aspire.
3. Finish discarding first
Discarding is not the main goal of the KonMari Method®, yet it is an important part of the process because it provides an opportunity to learn from your past experiences. After you have discarded you can fully bring your energy and attention to that what brings you joy.
4. Tidy by category, not by location
When you tidy by location, you will be repeating the same work over and over again. Tidying by category gives you a clear grasp of the amount of items you own, per category.
5. Follow the right order
Tidy your belongings in the following order - clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous) and sentimental items.
6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy
Focus on what you want to keep by asking yourself if belongings spark joy, so you can clearly relate to what you love – and what you need.
